Access and permissions

How accounts, roles, case assignments, and administrative access affect what a user can see and do.

On this page

Before you start

  • An individual PlaintiffDesk account.
  • Administrative access for role or user changes.

Typical workflow

  1. 1

Create or confirm an individual account for each person who needs access.

  2. 2

Assign the firm role that reflects the person’s responsibilities.

  3. 3

Add case or team assignments when access should be narrower than the whole firm.

  4. 4

Verify both navigation visibility and access to representative records.

  5. 5

Update or deactivate access promptly when responsibilities change.

Account access

Each person should use an individual account. Access is evaluated from the signed-in user, the firm workspace, the person’s role, and any case-specific assignment.

Role and feature access

Roles determine which platform areas and administrative actions are available. A visible navigation item does not by itself grant permission to the records behind it.

Case scope

Case access can be narrower than firm access. Users should expect restricted matters and sensitive sections to remain unavailable unless their assignment permits them.

User changes

Administrators should update or deactivate accounts promptly when responsibilities change. Historical activity remains associated with the user who performed it.

Keep in mind

  • Seeing a navigation item does not by itself guarantee access to every record behind it.
  • Historical activity remains connected to the person who performed it after access changes.
